Seminar "Scientific Support to EU Decision Making"

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and Eurostat gave jointly a two day seminar on the use of data, indicators, models and measurement tools for policy purposes to officials and experts from EU institutions and Member States, central agencies and authorities involved in evidence based decision making. Institutes, NGOs, journalists and researchers with an interest in the use of data for policy purposes were most welcome to participate in the debate

Objectives

The objectives of the seminar were:

  • to present the latest developments and thinking within the policy community on evidence-based decision making
  • to provide a structured discussion of the advantages, the challenges and the limitations of the use of(statistical) data and evidence for policy purposes
  • to present the key issues in data-related policy debates (e.g. composite indicators, valuation,modelling)
  • to learn by exchange of experiences and best practices how to ensure transparency, accountability and acceptance of evidence-based policy making
