Traineeships

The aims of the traineeship scheme (governed by a set of rules "Rules Governing the Traineeship Scheme of the Joint Research Centre") are to enable students or recent graduates to practise what they have acquired during their studies; to experience the professional world; and to gain a first hand experience of the workings of the JRC, and of the European Commission, in general. There are three types of traineeships: training related to the preparation of a thesis for a university degree, training after university education (or its equivalent), industrial placement.

The duration may not be for fewer than 3 months and for not more than one year.

    • How to apply

    If you would like to apply for a traineeship, you have to comply with all eligibility requirements as mentioned in the set of rules "Rules Governing the Traineeship Scheme of the Joint Research Centre" (pdf), especially article 2. For EU nationals the expected level of the 2nd language is B2 according to the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment", abbreviated as CEFR. For non-EU nationals the expected level of the English, French or German is C2 according to CEFR.

    Due to the launch of new external staff recruitment application tool (ESRA) there will be a transitional period:

    • Applications with all necessary attachments for trainee calls launched before 01/09/2011 should be sent only in response to the published vacancy, received not later than the deadline stated below the call reference number in the vacancy text and addressed to:
    • Applications for trainee calls launched after 01/09/2011 need to be completed on ESRA online application tool (http://recruitment.jrc.ec.europa.eu/).

    Therefore please read carefully information how to apply in the description of each call.

    Please note

    One application per person can be submitted. Only if application is unsuccessful/withdrawn at any stage of the application process, a candidate may apply for other traineeship profile within the deadline.

    Approximate time schedule

    Depending on the total number of candidates, the selection procedure should take approximately 8-10 weeks from the closing date announced in the call.

    The status of the call will be always visible next to the name of the call.

    The mission of the JRC is to provide customer-driven scientific and technical support for the conception, development, implementation and monitoring of EU policies. As a service of the European Commission, the JRC functions as a reference centre of science and technology for the Union. Close to the policy-making process, it serves the common interest of the Member States, while being independent of special interests, whether private or national.
