CIDIPRINT is a new action created in 2011.
Tha action has been created to investigate, assess, and forecast issues of the exploitation - intentional or unintentional - of personal digital data of citizens in our forthcoming digital society.
In a growing Digital Society a citizen nowadays is navigating in various dimensions like that of the cyberspace, or in motion as in transportation networks. While navigating the citizen is creating a steadily increasing trail of personal and individual data.
These personal data are archived somewhere, owned, and potentially used in unexpected ways. On one hand, the citizen, while to some extent being aware of this, is actively contributing to the data collection. On the other hand, the lack of protection of citizen digital footprints may lead to further, potentially malicious, processing of the data with unexpected consequences for the users and the society at large.
The CIDIPRINT action will develop and assess scenarios asociated with information recorded when a citizen interacts in a digital smart environment, in particular with the internet of the future and with intelligent transport systems.
These scenarios will illustrate how digital footprints are, can, should or should not be used. This includes aspects such as
(a) the intentional and transparent use of private data versus the unintentional or malicious use of the same information;
(b) the modification of user acceptance of private data exploitation according to different situations (e.g. normal life, emergency situation, service disruption);
(c) the digital footprint lifecycle and ownership;
(d) behavioral profiling;
(e) the increasing use of mobile communication and relative applications.
The CIDIPRINT action will also set out to define the metrics to assess and possibly compare:
- the impacts on the citizen associated with unexpected side-effects of the use of emerging ICT, taking into account multiple dimensions such as user convenience, ethics, privacy, and security;
- measures (e.g. code of conducts, regulatory acts) to mitigate those side-effects.
It will also carry out an analysis of the existing European and national legislations concerning data protection and other citizen's rights with respect to the risk associated with emerging ICT.
In parallel to these activities and research, the CIDIPRINT action will continue to provide the JRC with support to the specification of on-board vehicle platforms, for the integration of Intelligent Transport systems (ITS) applications, to be primarily installed in professional vehicles for safety and security regulatory purposes. This work extends the JRC ongoing tasks with the Digital Tachograph (i.e. ERCA - European Root Certification Authority, Interoperability Certification Laboratory). It will contribute to the definition of a new generation Digital Tachograph, with renewed security mechanisms, and of its possible use (within a common platform) for improving the safety and security of its users.
