Catch the train: Exchanging knowledge on education and employabilityScholars, researchers and policy makers are to discuss education, training and their role in finding and keeping employment at an international conference co-organised by the JRC's Centre for Research in Lifelong Learning (CRELL). The two day programme of "Catch the Train: Skills, Education and Jobs" was put together with the Directorate-General for Education and Culture and the EU-sponsored think tank European Expert Network on Economics of Education (EENEE). The event takes place on 20-21 June in Brussels.
This conference follows a European Commission proposal of late May on benchmarks related to the role of education and training leading to employment. The proposal is based on a JRC research which considers the combination of factors enabling employment and the mobility of higher education students between different countries, contributing to development of skills.
The two new benchmarks, which still need to be formally adopted by the Council, would complete a set of joint targets which EU countries have pledged to achieve by 2020. They include reducing early school leaving, increasing the share of higher education graduates, and getting more adults to participate in lifelong learning.
The sessions of the conference will revolve around three main themes: education as preparation for employment, school-to-work transitions and maintenance and upgrading of employability. Participants from Europe and the US are invited to address the challenges for the education and training institutions, the requirements of the labour market and potential solutions towards a skillsí demand-supply equilibrium.
