Detecting and monitoring maritime traffic and oil pollution
The VESPO (Vessels surveillance and port security) action studies scientific and technical issues related to maritime safety and security, including monitoring of sea-based oil pollution. A detailed description of the action can be found at: http://masure.jrc.ec.europa.eu The candidate should work at an academic level providing important contributions to the work of the group, covering: further development of software tools that analyse satellite SAR imagery and maritime surveillance data; development of end-to-end systems for satellite earth observation for maritime security; running pilot campaigns with these data and tools in close connection with customers; making technology assessments in the context of EU regulations and stakeholder interests; writing papers and giving presentations to professional audiences. Much of the work is carried out in international cooperative R&D projects.
Required profile: University education in one of the fields of signal processing, electrical engineering, physics, remote sensing, etc. Experience in remote sensing, maritime monitoring, radar, communications, etc. Interest in the European dimension and in working in a multi-cultural environment. Ability to take initiative and work without close supervision. Motivation to put in serious effort.
